Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
This is the largest engineering society in the world with over 320,000
members world-wide. The grade of Fellow is one of unusual professional
distinction conferred only by the Board of Directors upon a person of extraordinary
qualifications and experience.
IEEE Centennial Medal, 1984
"For Extraordinary Achievement" to mark
the 100th anniversary of the IEEE, a medallion inscribed
with the recipient's name and "Serving mankind throughout the world".
IEEE Fellow grade 1986
"For Contributions to Ground and Phase
Fault Protection for Industrial and Utility Distribution Systems"
IEEE Achievement Award , 1993
"For Leadership, Contributions and
Service to the Industrial & Commercial Power Systems Department
IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award, 1994
"For the Development and Application of Unique Analytical Techniques to
Improve Phase and Ground Fault Protection of Industrial Power Systems"
"This award was established by the IEEE Board of Directors in 1986, and
is presented for outstanding achievement in the field of industrial systems
engineering. The award may be presented annually to an individual,
or team of up to three persons, who have made exceptional contributions
to electrical engineering in the industrial environment through the design
or application of systems technology, as well as apparatus, devices, or
materials for plant power distribution, drive systems, process control,
or other utilization systems. It is presented by the Board of directors
on recommendation of the Technical Field Awards Council and the Awards
Board."
"The Award is named in honor of Richard Harold Kaufmann in memory
of his many important contributions to industrial systems engineering and
his dedicated service to the IEEE Industry Applications Society. The prize
consists of a certificate, a bronze medallion inscribed with the name of
the recipient, and a $5,000 check. The award is funded by the IEEE
Industry Applications Society."
Later served on the Kaufmann Award Committee. Became Chair on 5th year.
IEEE Ralph H. Lee Prize Paper Award, 1995
For a manuscript
entitled "Reliability of Utility Supply Configurations for Industrial Power
Systems" This award is conferred by the IEEE Industrial & Commercial
Power Systems Department for the best paper presented during the preceding
year. The award is named in honor of Ralph H. Lee who was distinguished
in the industrial power systems field. The paper is based on methodology
contained in the ANSI/IEEE Standard 493, IEEE Recommended Practice for
the Design of Reliable Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (Gold Book),
one of eleven color books written by members of the department for use
by the engineering practitioner.
IEEE Industry Applications Society 3rd Place Prize Paper Award, 1995
(paper same as R.H. Lee Award) This award honors those papers printed in
the IAS Transactions of the previous year. In addition to a certificate,
an award of $250.00 is awarded to the 2nd prize recipient.
IEEE Third Millennium Medal, 2000

Cook County (Chicago, Illinois) Coroner's Blue Ribbon Jury, 1957
Portable televisions were being manufactured during this period, and users
purchased carts to move the small TV sets into particular areas.
In this case, a mother moved her TV into the kitchen area following which
her 5 year old son was electrocuted. The jury was convened to determine
if the set had been manufactured safely, and how did the boy become electrocuted.
The jury concluded that the set was made defectively during manufacturing,
and during the incident, 135 V DC was imposed on the metal
case. When the boy bridged the space between the TV case and the
stainless steel sink, an electrical shock killed him.
The Institute for the Advancement of Engineering recognizes those
southern California engineers who have distinguished themselves.
